Smithers Skatepark Society to host soft opening as phase one nears completion

Phase one of the Smithers Skatepark expansion project is ahead of schedule, according to skatepark society.

Contractors started construction on the first phase this spring after plans were approved by Town Council on April 12.

Concrete has been poured  for the extension.

According to the Smithers Skatepark Society, it will be hosting a soft launch on Friday (Sept 16).

Spokesperson Sarah Fitzmaurice said that there will be a skate jam, live music and experienced skaters.

“We thought it was really important to have a celebration for the community, have a skate jam. We’re going to have some experienced skaters that can show some of the younger skaters how to use each feature, what each feature is,” she said.

Fitzmaurice added that helmets are strongly recommended at the event.

She also said that the society is excited to host this event.

“We really couldn’t be happier, we got really lucky with the concrete pouring in terms of weather so, we’re all just so grateful,” Fitzmaurice said.

She added that a new skatepark has been in the works since 2012.

The event is being held from 3 until 5 p.m. at the skatepark located just off of Highway 16.

Fitzmaurice is reminding community members that the skatepark is still a construction site and that no one is to skate on the concrete while they wait for a site inspection.
