Boat theft suspect charged with attempted murder

The suspect in the boat theft near Topley Landing is being charged with attempted murder along with other charges.

According to court documents, Thomas Kennedy shot at a Houston RCMP officer after they attempted to stop him following a report of a break, enter and theft of a boat at a lodge.

Police received a report of the break and enter on August 30 and staged at a bridge near the area where he approached the bridge.

Kennedy then shot at police where an RCMP officer responded by firing their service pistol.

Police said in a news release that Kennedy was taken to hospital after he received a non life threatening injury.

Kennedy is also being charged with break and enter with intent to commit an offense, possession of stolen property and dangerous operation of conveyance.

He is expected to appear in court in Williams Lake on Wednesday (Sept 14).

Meanwhile, the Independent Investigations Office is investigating police actions during the incident.
