Smithers Terry Fox run returns to Central Square

The Smithers Terry Fox Run will be hosting an in person event for the first time since 2019.

It went online in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Organizer Lauri Deveau, it will be a 5 kilometre run or 10 kilometre if the participant wants to do it twice which will start at the Central Park building at the corner of Main Street and Highway 16.

She said that to participate in the run it is by donation.

“There’s no minimum donation. Just come out, donate what you can and everything goes towards cancer research, a very very awesome cause,” Deveau said.

She added that donations can be done either in person or online on the Terry Fox website.

As of this afternoon (Thursday), $400 has been raised out of the $2,000 goal.

Deveau also said they are still searching for some volunteers for the event.

“If anybody would like to volunteer we are short on volunteers this year. Everyone is used to doing things online. We’re going to be live, we’re going to get to see faces,” she said.

Anyone wishing to volunteer is encouraged to call Deveau at 250-996-1399.

Registration for the run will start at 11am with the run commencing at 12 p.m.

Meanwhile, in Burns Lake a run will start at the Francois Lake Hall at 1 p.m. and registration starts at noon.

So far the Burns Lake run has raised $1,370 surpassing the $1,000 goal.
