Two students assist school bus driver during medical emergency

Two students from Smithers Secondary are being called heroes after they ran into action while the driver was having a medical incident on the bus.

The incident occurred on September 23 while picking students up at Smithers Secondary.

Grade 8 student Jimmy Fitzmaurice and a grade 11 student who does not wish to be identified provided assistance to the driver by stopping the bus and calling in on the bus radio for help.

Secretary Treasurer with School District 54 Dave Margerm said that school administration and maintenance immediately responded.

“Despite the fact that the School District practices bus safety drills in the event of such emergencies, the School District cannot thank and acknowledge the two students enough for their quick reaction,” he said.

No person injuries or property damage was reported.

Margerm added that the bus driver was transported to hospital for assessment and observation and was released the next day.
