Tributes pour in for slain Burnaby RCMP officer

Our country is mourning the killing of another police officer in the line of duty.

RCMP Constable Shaelyn Yang was stabbed while attending a homeless camp in Burnaby yesterday (Tuesday), in the company of a city park worker.

The 31-year-old died in the hospital.

Yang was a member of the local detachment’s mental health and homeless outreach team.

The suspect was shot by police and is in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Earlier this month, Constables Devon Northrup and Morgan Russell were shot and killed while attending a residential disturbance call in Innisfil, north of Toronto.

Their funeral service will be held tomorrow.

In addition, fellow police officers, political leaders, and many others are paying tribute to Constable Yang.

Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, commander of the RCMP in our province, stated Yang had been with the force for just three years.

He added she was caring and compassionate, adding her loss is “immeasurable.”

Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth calls Yang’s death a “tragic and horrific situation, while his federal counterpart, Marco Mendicino, said he was devastated by the news.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted he was “incredibly saddened” by Yang’s death.
