Indigenous man “extremely hurt” Vancouver police officers absent from apology ceremony

A ceremony to mark an apology from the Vancouver Police Board in Bella Bella was cancelled yesterday evening (Monday), as the two officers who detained and handcuffed an indigenous man and his granddaughter at a bank in 2019 didn’t show up.

The groundbreaking ceremony is part of a human rights settlement….the First Nation “expected” the two officers to attend….but there was no formal requirement.

Maxwell Johnson, the grandfather, says their absence was “extremely hurtful.”

The event will be replaced by an “uplifting ceremony” to help Johnson and his family.
