Food bank visits in BC have spiked by 25% over the past year

Food bank usage is increasing faster in B-C than the national average.

Yesterday’s (Thursday) annual report from Food Banks Canada shows visits to food banks were up 15 percent in March over the same month last year.

But in our province, that increase was 25 percent.

More than 163-thousand people visited a food bank in B-C that month, and over one-third were children.

Food banks across the province are reporting sharp rises in visits from marginalized populations immigrants, people with disabilities, and the homeless.

But they’re also seeing increases in people with jobs indicating that inflation is overwhelming peoples’ wages.
