Car Vandalism and Public Drinking; Smithers RCMP Report August 1 – 9

Smithers RCMP have responded to 126 calls thus far in August.

Last Wednesday, August 5th, local police encounter an allegedly drunk male near Main and Broadway trying to fight anyone who talked to him.

The man allegedly attempted to assault the officer when RCMP told him he was under arrest.

Neither the man nor the officer suffered injuries.

The man is being charged with assaulting a police officer, obstruction, and causing a disturbance.

Police officers have been called at least twice about public drinking since the 1st.

In two instances, Police have found numerous people drinking.

RCMP caught 5 people drinking in a field behind the buildings on Main and Railway on Thursday, August 6th.

They found another 6 on Saturday, August 8th drinking near Main and Broadway.

In either case, Police seized or poured out the alcohol. No charges were laid.

On Sunday, August 9th, Police were received a complaint of a driver smoking with a two-year-old child in the car.

RCMP remind citizens that second-hand smoke is not only unhealthy, but it’s illegal to smoke with a child in the car, regardless if the window is open or not.

There were also a few instances regarding vehicles.

Police were called to a smashed office window and a stolen car at National Car Rental on Saturday, August 1st. The next day in Telkwa, an RCMP vehicle was vandalised with yellow paint. Police are still investigating both instances.
