Potential Free public skate, shinny this winter

Smithers could have free shinny and public skating this winter with a little help from local businesses.

The Town is accepting advertisement proposals that would fund ice times for the public.

In return, the sponsoring companies would receive free advertising for that entire day.

Project spokesperson Andrew Hillaby says similar formats exist in other BC towns and believes it can also work here.

“We are a northern community. We are a winter sport community and everyone sees the benefits of public skating and shinny hockey as both an individual and family event,” he says.

Hillaby warns public skate and shinny will go back to the drop-in rate if the project doesn’t get enough funding. The proposal deadline is August 20th.

The town now also offers online arena registrations for those looking to book ice time.
