Historically, the school year begins on the Tuesday following Labour Day, but this year, a local board will break tradition.
For the first time, School District 54 will begin classes on Wednesday (September 9th).
Tuesday will be a Professional Development day for staff.
Vice Superintendent Mike McDiarmid says a day off for students now will mean fewer disruptions later on in the year.
“We kind of felt that … after the long weekend people are still on holidays. It seemed like less disruption than going three weeks in and then having a day off,” he says.
District 91 will continue with tradition and start classes on Tuesday, September 8th.
