Hazelton home victory, Steelheads left washed up

The Hazelton Wolverines and Smithers Steelheads both played games in the Upper Skeena Recreation Centre last weekend.

The Wolverines kicked things off on Saturday against the Williams Lake Stampeders and struggled to get a footing in the first period.

That’s due to Hazelton’s Keano Wilson letting four shots into the net giving the Stamps a 4-0 lead headed into the second.

The Wolverines started clawing back, starting with a successful penalty shot by Sean Maktaak.

Soon after, Cameron Danylchuk brought Hazelton up by one, followed by Joel Patsey to make the game 4-3.

About seven minutes into the second, Tanner Wort tied the Stamps, and Maktaak advanced the Wolverines into the lead, ending the second 5-4.

Corey Loring sealed Hazelton’s win early into the third, and the period ended with three home players in the box.

Sunday kept the Stamps in Hazelton, as the Smithers Steelheads played home on the foreign ice.

Things started rocky in the first period as Ethan Perry scored the lone home goal, ending the period 3-1 for Williams Lake.

The second period started in the right direction as Steelheads Captain Brendan Moore brought the team closer to a tie at 3-2.

Things started going downstream quick as the Stampede ended the period with a 9-2 lead.

Williams Lake advanced their lead near the start of period three, with Steelhead’s Levi Olson bringing the score to 10-3.

Olson later scored the final goal for Smithers, and the period ended in an 11-4 upset.

The final period also saw the home bench thin as three Steelheads were taken off the ice due to roughing.

This weekend sees both teams taking a break, with Smithers hosting the Kitimat Ice Demons on November 4th.
