Seismologists advise BV to be prepared for quakes

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake 200 km West of Port Hardy this morning was too far away and too weak to effect anyone in the North.

However, this hasn’t stopped Seismologists from reminding residents to prepare themselves for a shake.

Canadian Geological Survey Researcher Konn Kao says earthquakes are more likely to happen in the South but could happen anywhere along the coast inland Alaska.

“There is no doubt that we will have big earthquakes in the future and, therefore, being prepared is the most effective way to mitigate these seismic hazards,” he says.

Kao says an earthquake could happen at any time and even interior residents should be prepared.
