Lakes District under extreme cold warning

An extreme cold warning has been issued for the Burns Lake and Lakes District area.

According to Environment Canada, this is due to an arctic airmass coming through the region bringing temperatures down to around –40 degrees.

The cold front is expected to last until Saturday morning.

They add young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter are at the greatest risk during the warning.

It’s also recommended to cover up as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Residents are also advised to check on older family, friends, and neighbours through the cold, and to keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as jumper cables and blankets.

Temperatures are expected to reach –34 degrees tonight (Wednesday) with a wind chill of –43.

No warnings are in effect for the Bulkley Valley with temperatures reaching –24 degrees tonight.

Full forecasts for the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District can be found on the Environment Canada website.
