Smithers’ all-candidates forum recap

The Della Herman theatre was full of people both young and old Wednesday evening, to hear from political candidates in the Skeena – Bulkley Valley riding.

Many sat attentively to listen to the four present candidates entertain questions from local media before getting in line and asking some themselves.

The four participating politicians were Christian Heritage Party candidate Donald Spratt, Liberal candidate Brad Layton, Conservative representative Tyler Nesbitt, and NDP candidate Nathan Cullen.

After over two hours of answering questions, each member left a message for the people of the area.

Spratt:

“The old ways were better and it’s a brave new world with secular humanism in Canada and we need to return to the values that made us a great and prosperous as a nation. And if we don’t, we’ll lose them, and there will be consequences.”

Layton:

“We have a problem right now and it’s the current government: it doesn’t listen to us anymore and it’s taking us for granted in our voting. We need to come out and vote; I’m hoping you come out and vote for me, but come out and vote whichever party you’re voting for.”

Nesbitt:

“We’ve got really good people up here [on stage], I think people from every single party should be proud of the representatives up here but there are some clear contrasts and in the end, it’s what party do you trust to manage the economy, protect your job, and protect your retirement.”

Cullen:

“There were a lot of young people which was very encouraging for me and the questions were hard and ranging so that was one of the better debates I’ve seen just because we covered so much ground and you could really see the differences between the parties. Absolutely everyone should get out and vote and bring someone who’s never voted before with you.”

Green Party candidate Jeannie Parnell was not in attendance.

You can vote now at all Elections Canada offices until October 13th.
