Firefighters teaching kids during Fire Prevention Week

Grades 1 and 2 students in Smithers schools are being greeted local firefighters to learn about safety, as part of “Fire Prevention Week.”

Smithers Fire Cheif Keith Stecko says young students act as safety ambassadors for their families.

“It’s a real good start for us, it’s a real good start for kids knowing and understanding about fire prevention and when they go home and talk to their parents about it reinforces the message,” he says.

This year’s motto is “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm!

Stecko adds that everyone test their alarms monthly and replace all smoke alarms at least every 10 years.
