New roof for Hazelton Arena may lie in online vote

A simple click of your mouse could mean great things for winter recreation in Hazelton.

The Skeena Ice Arena board could win $100,000 for a new Ken Trombley Memorial Arena roof through the Aviva Community Fund, which awards money to community projects via an online vote.

Anyone can vote up to once a day and Hazelton Minor Hockey President Ryneld Starr asks to help out by clicking.

“The arena is a real central hub of activity for everybody in the Hazelton,” he says, “We have a lot of [recreational] hockey players, Friday night public skating, and figure skating, so something like this is really needed in the Hazeltons.”

While an outdoor rink isn’t out of the question, Starr says there could be problems including ice conditions, rain, snow removal, and temperatures.

“As nice as it might be to play outdoors, it’s obviously a lot better to have it enclosed so that we know we can use the rink every day of the winter,” he adds.

The old arena roof was torn down in March after it was deemed unsafe.

Voting opened Tuesday and will continue until October 23rd.

To vote or register, click here or visit the Facebook page.

The arena also has a gofundme page to pay for the roofs removal.
