Federal carbon tax increases today

Gas prices are going up today (Monday) as the federal carbon tax rises as well.

According to Canadians for Affordable Energy, the 23 per cent tax increase will work out to a six per cent a litre hike in BC and Ontario.

In Alberta, it could jump eight cents as the provincial fuel tax also increases.

Several Premiers spoke out against the tax last week and called on the federal government to rethink it.

However, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau countered that if the premiers don’t like the approach on pricing pollution, they can develop their own.

According to GasBuddy, gas prices are between 159.9 and 165.9 cents a litre in Prince George as of 10:30 this morning.

Demonstrations protesting the increase have popped up around the country, including in Prince George.
