Drought Management session being held near Smithers

The provincial Drought Management series is making a stop in Smithers next week.

This is being put on by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship at Glenwood Hall next Tuesday. (Apr 16th)

Minister of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship Nathan Cullen said several other workshops have also been held across the province.

“Some are more focused on farmers, some focused on general community, talking about a bunch of things,” he said.

The one in Smithers is focused on Farmers, Cullen added “We have a lot of knowledge from generations on the land and people know how to set water aside. We also have a lot of good science and awareness of things that can help, and experience of what can help from not just BC, but all-around North America.”

Drought statuses across the province started last year and most, including in the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District, remain in place.

“We’re not in a good place with regards to the snowpack. This is the lowest it’s been in 60 years,” said Cullen.

He added there is always a hope for more rain this spring, but it’s good for people to be prepared in case that doesn’t come.

Those wanting to attend can sign up here.
