Local Fire departments receive grants for upgrades and training

Provincial funding is being distributed to 100 communities for their emergency operation centres.

“As we move into the wildfire season, we know that many communities may need to activate their emergency operations centres (EOC) to respond and support people in their areas,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.

This includes about $25,000 going to the Burns Lake Fire Department for tabletop exercises.

The Houston Fire Department is getting $30,000 for training and new equipment, with Granisle receiving a similar amount for building upgrades and training.

The Witset First Nation is getting about $14,000 for equipment upgrades at its fire department.

“Local emergency operations centres are crucial for co-ordinating emergency response to keep people safe. This funding will help communities support responders on the ground and better protect people in emergency situations,” said Ma.

In total, the province is footing $2.7 million for various upgrades and training.
