Council leaves Pro-life crosswalk proposal without a motion

In response to a colourful decision last month, Council heard a proposal for a new walkway at Tuesday night’s meeting.

A full gallery listened to Council discuss a proposed pro-life crosswalk and the public’s mixed responses to the recently-approved rainbow intersection.

Each attending Councilor spoke to the importance and sensitivity of both issues, but none made a motion to move forward with the new request. As it stands, there will not be a pro-life crosswalk.

Mayor Taylor Bachrach and Council appreciate that both crosswalks pose sensitive issues in the community.

“It’s the kind of thing that’s tough to grapple with in local government, he says, “at the same time, I think what we heard from around the Council table were some pretty strongly held views about the needs for our community to be inclusive and welcoming and for people to feel safe.”

Council still plans to install a Rainbow crosswalk in the Spring.

In the past month, Council received 14 formal letters rejecting the rainbow crosswalk. It received 64 in favour of it.
