Small northern communities to get internet upgrade

High-speed internet is expanding across northern BC.

The province has announced infrastructure upgrades are coming to Fort St. James, Williams Prairie Meadow 1A, Cluculz Lake area and Burns Lake, and residents will soon have access to high-speed internet.

“People in remote and rural areas need the same high-speed internet access as people do in urban centres,” said George Chow, Minister of Citizens’ Services. “We are committed to our goal of connecting every home by 2027 so everyone can take advantage of better access to online education, employment, business opportunities and services unlocked by internet connectivity.”

According to the province, more than 1,300 households will be impacted.

CityWest will be building and providing internet to these locations, they will also be putting up nearly $3 million to help cover construction.

The provincial government will contribute $1.6 million, the federal government will contribute 3,8 million, and the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako will pitch in $713,200.
