Wildfire numbers remain low in the Northwest Fire Centre

No wildfires are currently burning in the Northwest Fire Centre ahead of the Victoria Day long weekend.

Fire Information Officer Kaitlyn Bailey said, “Since April 1st, 2024, there have been seven new wildfires.”

Most have been within either the Nadina or Bulkley fire zones, both currently under category two and three fire bans.

Those that began this year have been considered human caused or are still under investigation.

This season has been easier on fire crews; 22 blazes were counted by this time last year.

Campfires are still allowed within the centre for the long weekend.

Bailey said a campfire is “any open fire that is smaller than half a metre wide by half a metre high.”

Anyone planning to have a campfire is advised to keep eight litres of water or a shovel nearby to extinguish it with.

“You also must have a fuel break around the campfire. You can do this by clearing any debris or anything that can catch on fire,” she said.

Other suggestions include creating a non-flammable fire ring, to not have a campfire when it’s windy, and ensure ashes are cold to the touch.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation, call 1 (800) 663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone.
