Cell phone policy draft released by SD54

School District 54 (SD54) has released its draft policy on Personal Electronic Device Use in schools.

This comes after the province announced it would be restricting the use of cellphones in schools earlier this year.

“What it will mean is that elementary schools will be required to have in their code of conduct that students won’t have access to personal electronic devices during the school day,” Superintendent Mike McDiarmid said.

Secondary schools would have a similar point added to their codes, and instead only restricting usage during class time and not the whole school day.

This includes cell phones, tablets, laptops, and portable video game systems.

An exception is also laid out in the policy for students under certain circumstances.

“We do have some students that use these devices as learning tools that help them meet their educational goals so obviously, we want to have some exceptions to the rule,” said McDiarmid.

The draft is currently receiving feedback from stakeholders with plans to have the policy in effect this fall.

More about the policy can be found on the School District’s website.
