Layton finds silver lining in Election loss

Even though Liberal candidate Brad Layton isn’t headed to Ottawa, he has found joy in defeat.

Layton lost the Skeena – Bulkley Valley race to NDP candidate Nathan Cullen – who will represent the riding in the House of Commons for a fifth consecutive term – Monday night.

However, Layton’s election office was still in high spirits, celebrating a Liberal majority government and Justin Trudeau becoming the now Prime Minister.

“I’m feeling great. We’ve painted this country red. A majority government for the Liberals is a good sign for our economy and for our infrastructure across this Province. We need to kick start our economy,” he says.

Even if the riding’s seat in Ottawa is an orange one, Layton is proud of his campaign’s accomplishments, which are highlighted by more Liberal awareness in the Northwest.

“We [the Liberal party] were 3.5% of the vote in the last election and our goal was to get into the 20s.”

As of 1:00 PM Tuesday, Layton accounted for 18.7% of the riding’s votes (with 217 of 219 of the polls accounted for).

As a Telkwa Councilor, he says there are a lot of things he learned campaigning that he can bring to the municipal government.

“Telkwa isn’t a community on is own with infrastructure issues and some of the issues that we’re facing. Some of the contacts made across the riding we can use these in the future and work together as a team to solve some of our issues.”
