BC Peace Region not out of the woods yet on wildfire front

Rain and cooler temperatures continue to aid wildfire efforts within the Prince George Fire Centre.

Over the weekend, the skies opened up over the Fort Nelson area, however, warmer conditions are expected in the Northeast later this week.

Information Officer, Pedro Roldan-Delgado told Vista Radio they are keeping a close eye on a pair of holdover blazes that continue to burn including Donnie Creek.

“With the new growth, it has estimated to be at 3,493 hectares and is still out of control but we do have crews working on it as well with Snowfall Creek and the new growth is 2,703 hectares.”

He added the fire situation in our area is a lot better than what it was last year.

“Currently, for the 2024 season, the total active wildfires is 24. So, we have 10 being out of control, one being held and 13 that are under control.”

“At this time, we are below seasonal temperatures but during the week we are anticipating a warming and drying trend. It will bring higher temperatures and lower relative humidity – that should bring us back to the more seasonal conditions we are used to.”

Currently, there are 24 active wildfires in the Prince George Fire Centre – 10 are out of control, while one is being held and 13 others are considered under control.

As of April 1st, 324,000 hectares have burned province-wide, most of it located in the PGFC.
