In a single evening, nearly half the legal funds were raised to save a Syrian refugee family.
At a soup & dessert fundraiser at St. James Church on Wednesday night, $14,500 were donated to bringing a refugee family to Smithers.
Spokesperson Pauline Mahoney says people understand this a major humanitarian crisis and want to help out.
“We have a place here that we can offer refuge in our town and in our community and in our country and people who can no longer be safe in their own land,” she says, “I think that’s why people are responding so generously.”
Legally, there needs to be $30,000 raised to support the family for its first year in Canada.
The next fundraiser will be held in late November.
