A groundbreaking ceremony was held today (Friday) in Granisle for the Copperview Seniors Housing Complex.
The project was between the Granisle and District Senior Citizens Association Society and BC Housing to add 12 new housing units to the community.
The project is partly funded by the province through their 10-year housing plan.
“We were fortunate enough with our application back in 2021 to procure some of those funds,” said Society President Stan Hislop.
The original plan for the complex was to have 10 units but was increased to 12 based on the land size and demand.
“We are a very small community and we have limited resources for individuals with regards to healthcare and so 12 units was thought to be manageable for the community,” Hislop added.
Ten of those units will be one-bedroom dwellings, the others will have two bedrooms.
The complex will be on MacDonald Avenue where Copperview Park, the first municipal park in Granisle, was located.
“As we move into this housing project, we’ve determined that we will call the complex Copperview Seniors Housing to maintain some hold on the history of our village,” said Hislop.
Construction is set to begin next week, with people moving in late next year.
