Tonight’s Smithers council meeting preview

Downtown sign bylaws, public requests, and an “Age-Friendly Assessment and Action plan” are all on the agenda for tonight’s Smithers Council meeting.

Due to a lack of education and communication between the Town and many Main street businesses, there hasn’t been complete compliance with the sign bylaws.

A recent meeting between a few council members and the Main Street Merchants was the first step towards resolving the issue.

Council has been recommended to help staff with solutions so the bylaw can fit modern business needs.

Bulkley Valley Naturalists would like to see trees planted along the Willowvale Wetlands trail.

The Naturalists propose this would support the Access Smithers project, and make the trail both easier to access and more eye-catching.

Town staff has recommended that Council supports an Age-Friendly Assessment and Action plan for next year.

By creating an assessment document, Council can measure the needed changes within Town and make plans to improve upon them.

With recent funding from the Ministry of Health and UBCM, certain issues like accessibility and safety both in and outdoors can be addressed.

The public is invited to tonight’s meeting at the town’s Council Chambers at 6:30 PM.
