Smithers housing project close to starting construction

Almost 40 new housing units are about to start construction in Smithers following a groundbreaking ceremony today. (Wednesday)

The project is a collaboration between the Dze L’ Kant Friendship Society and BC Housing and will be built at 1621 Main Street.

“These 37 homes at Ken’ulh K’it Yikh will mark a step forward in offering affordable and culturally supportive places for Indigenous families and seniors in Smithers,” said Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen.

The society started working towards having the housing built six years ago, which Executive Director Annette Morgan said faced roadblocks.

“I think there always will be roadblocks and challenges, specifically when we’re looking at rezoning and ensuring that projects like this will be built in municipalities and communities,” she said.

This is the first Indigenous led housing project in the town and will be called Ken’ulh K’it Yikh meaning “wetland housing”.

“We know that many existing affordable housing buildings are often missing holistic programming and cultural spaces that offer a sense of belonging for Indigenous people looking for an affordable, safe, and inclusive place to live,” said Minister of Housing Ravi Kahlon.

Funding for the project was provided by BC Housing’s Indigenous Housing Fund with land provided by the town.

A time capsule was also filled at the ceremony with messages from attendees that will be opened in 2044.

“The Town of Smithers is thrilled to see this project materialize; we are proud to have contributed to the site,” said Smithers Mayor Galdys Atrill.

The building is expected to be completed in 2026.
