Smithers Police host collaborative gathering with First Nations

Smithers RCMP hosted a gathering outside their detachment yesterday (Tuesday) to collaborate about how to better support the Lake Babine Nation.

This involved the Indigenous Policing Services, Office of the Wet’suwet’en, and Wet’suwet’en First Nations.

“We got together inviting some community members from the situation table to come and meet with us to mingle with out indigenous partners,” said Constable Jocelyn Foidart.

Several people from the community attended the event which she said wasn’t expected.

“It’s just great to see the community members come out to honor and support our indigenous partners because we value those relationships a lot.”

This isn’t the last event of its kind as police members will be going to Burns Lake next month to meet with the Lake Babine Nation Chief and Council.

“Through collaborative public safety programs, there are funding dollars available for intervention circles,” said Foidart.

Some more collaborative partnerships are in the works, but no other events are currently being planned.
