Smithers Fire respond to two BC Day calls

A pair of calls were made to the Smithers Fire Department yesterday. (Monday)

“We got the call to the encampment (near the Smithers Library) at about 9:00 yesterday morning,” said Fire Chief Derek Dickson.

Five firefighters and two chiefs attended the first call which was extinguished about an hour later.

Three tents were in flames when crews arrived and were destroyed in the incident.

“We believe it was open burning in a tent, but we are unable to confirm exactly what happened,” said Dickson.

The second call was made at 9:17 that evening due to an RV fire near Raceway Road on Highway 16.

An engine with six firefighters and a chief officer attended the call.

“The fire was fully extinguished on arrival by the owner of the vehicle,” said Dickson.

No cause was determined as the blaze began in the engine compartment.

No injuries were reported due to either incident.
