Smithers’ new garbage truck won’t be hybrid

The Town of Smithers will soon have a second garbage truck in its fleet.

It was approved at Tuesday’s town council meeting due to the additional distance to take recycling to the new facility in Witset.

Some potential worries were brought up, including where the funding would come from.

“I understand the reason for borrowing and we haven’t had the Resource Benefits Alliance discussion but I kind of would like this to be part of that discussion as well,” said Councilor Frank Wray.

Town staff also looked at getting a hybrid vehicle which was turned down due to difficulty of maintenance.

“It would have been nice to go hybrid, but I think it was pointed out really clearly to us that it’s just not the way to go,” said Councilor John Buikema.

While the truck will have a diesel engine, the lift arm, hopper, and compactor would all be driven by a battery.

The added cost to train staff was also a factor council’s decision.

The decision was made without opposition.
