A Lakes District Secondary club had a very busy couple of days recently helping the community.
19 students apart of the school’s Rotary Interact Club were invited to “We Day” in Vancouver last week, an event celebrating youth empowerment.
With words from guest speakers like astronaut Chris Hadfield fresh in their minds, the group returned home and began helping the local food bank.
The students put on a dance Thursday night and charged canned goods as part of admission, something Teacher Patty Dubé says was a huge success.
“Dances can be a little awkward, but our senior students were right in there and getting the younger kids our dancing,” she says, “they did the DJing, they did the light show, they set up, they clean up. It’s just wonderful to see them all working together.”
The students also went door-to-door Tuesday asking for non-perishable items.
The group has collected well over 1000 items this week.
