BC eyeing sale restrictions on machetes; Ottawa asked to step in

The provincial government wants Ottawa to regulate the sale of machetes.

Attorney-General Niki Sharma wants her federal counterpart to classify the blades as restricted weapons, which would severely limit their sales.

Such a change would also allow police to seize and destroy the weapons.

Sharma says there is no legitimate reason for machetes in modern cities yet they are inexpensive and easy to access without restrictions.

There have been several attacks involving machetes over the past couple of years, mostly in Vancouver.
