Assessment shows CNC cutbacks devastating to Burns Lake

The Village of Burns Lake has released an impact assessment, showing the consequences from College of New Caledonia funding cuts.

The 91-page document reveals a 75% enrollment drop, over 70 lost jobs, and 3.7 million dollars in lost employment revenues.

Staff and students won’t be the only ones suffering. Mayor Luke Strimbold says the Village’s vulnerable population will lose all family programming.

“What we’re risking here is the support services that have reduced FASD births and have reduced crime in our community. We’re creating a risk for these community members in Burns Lake,” he says.

To address the issues, Strimbold says a newly formed Lakes District Post Secondary Education Committee is trying to structure a new, communal institute for the area.

“As a hub of services and post-secondary education, how it works well together, and create a business plan that we can then bring forward to the Provincial government and other accredited organisations,” he says.

The committee will first meet on November 10th at 5:00 pm in the Chamber of Commerce building.

Members of the community are invited to share their ideas.
