The Smithers Skatepark Expansion grand opening was held today (Friday).
This comes after phase two recently completed construction which added a bowl feature to the park.
“To have things go from a dream, to paper, to now concrete; all here to celebrate it and actually skate the bowl is crazy,” said Director Jake Daly.
That was the final addition to the skatepark itself, but extras are also being planned in a third phase.
“Now we’re going to make it beautiful. People drive by when they come through Smithers and so we want this to be a real beautiful feature,” he said.
Included is also a sign along the highway thanking some of the sponsors, a water bottle filling station, shaded seating, and more potentially added.
“The goal is to tackle the landscaping portion next year,” said Daly.
The project has been in the works since 1996 when the original park opened.
The first phase completed construction last year (2023) with phase two being ahead of schedule.
