A long-time librarian at the Smithers Public Library is ending her career’s final chapter.
Lynnda McDougall started at the library in 2004 when they were transitioning from a punch card system to a digital one.
“When I started, it was mostly magazines, books, some audio books and VHS tapes, and that has just exploded exponentially,” she said.
Other additions to the library included their take home tech kits, hiking gear lending, and even renovations to the building.
“Every time I think we can’t cram another thing in here, we do, and we desperately need more space,” said McDougall.
One memory that stuck out to her was one of a challenge trying to find a book based on a description.
“Even when they come in and say, ‘I don’t remember the title, I don’t know the author, but it has a blue cover and it’s about women in Japan.’”
In her time working at the library, McDougall was given the nickname “Library Lynnda” which has been used beyond the library walls.
“It’s wonderful watching all the generations grow up from coming in as a little baby all the way up through school,” she said.
She won’t hold the title of longest serving librarian there as the record is set at about 45 years.
Even so, she was the most senior staff prior to retiring and feels the others there are prepared to keep the library going.
“I’m really excited actually and that was part of my decision to retire; we’ve got really good staff now and I feel like I’m leaving it in good hands,” said McDougall.
Library Director Wendy Wright started at the library ten years ago but will remember McDougall for her willingness to participate.
“We’ve had some silly themed days just for fun with the patrons over the years and we know she’s always game for getting into the spirit of things,” Wright said.
This includes dressing up for their Star Wars Day, Pirates Day, and even participating in their PJ Days.
With McDougall’s departure, the library held a farewell event this afternoon (Wednesday) so those who’ve met her can wish her well.
She will also be indirectly part of their upcoming Haunted Library event on Friday.
