Main Street in Smithers receives provincial recognition

World Atlas has placed Smithers’ Main Street atop its list of the best in BC.

“I think our downtown and Main Street are lovely and so it’s great to be recognized for that,” said Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill.

The street began construction in the early 1900s and was one of the first to be built in the town.

Since then, several revitalization projects have changed the street, including when the gutters were filled to allow for sidewalks.

The most recent wrapped up in 2022 which saw the town replace all of the benches and planter boxes, including the trees which had inhabited them.

Atrill added the town isn’t currently looking at any further upgrades to Main Street, but there are some in the works for the greater downtown area.

Some of the features noted by World Atlas include:

  • Views of Hudson Bay Mountain
  • Smithers and Bulkley Valley Brewing
  • The Alpine theme
  • And the Alpenhorn Man statue

“Congratulations to all the folks who work hard to make downtown and main street beautiful including the merchants, those who work there, and our staff who work on the gardens and landscaping,” said Atrill.

Other towns included in the list were Whistler, Squamish, Pemberton, Lillooet, Tofino, and Nelson.

The full list can be read on World Atlas’ website.
