Houston organization takes over Salvation Army Thrift Store

Things are changing at the Salvation Army store in Houston as a new organization will be operating in the space.

Today (Tuesday), the Houston Community Services Association (HCSA) announced they are taking over the thrift store and coffee kitchen.

In a release Association Chair Andrea Patrick said, “We wanted to make sure that the support provided by the Salvation Army would not leave our community.”

“We had done a ten-year review of our last service in Houston and came up with the fact that we weren’t able to meet the demand of the food bank through the thrift store sales,” said Salvation Army Director Lara Niessen.

She added more than just their Houston Mall location was donated to HCSA.

“The Salvation Army had given all of our equipment to Community Services for free so that they would have a good foot to start off with.”

Prior to the mills shutting down, Niessen said about four people per day would utilize the food bank which jumped to 20 after they closed.

With the change, the HCSA Vault Store will relocate into the space while continuing to provide the services already available.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Salvation Army for their generosity in gifting Houston Community Services with their stock and equipment and for their support throughout this transition,” said Patrick.

Niessen said the Salvation Army is also covering the cost to have a new sign made for outside the Houston Mall.
