Smithers Art Gallery facing closure of the Creation Station

The future of the Smithers Art Gallery’s Creation Station is up in the air.

According to Manager Nicole Chernish, the town sent the gallery a letter on October 31st letting them know they will have the Railway Avenue lease until August.

During last night’s Smithers Committee of the Whole meeting, Chernish brought up concerns to council about what losing the space may mean.

“When I started with the organization, we received $6,600 dollars from BC Gaming. Over the years, it was increased as our programing increased,” she said.

That number is now $20,000 which Chernish said could be reduced if their programing drops.

Prior to the gallery receiving the space in 2017, they ran two kids summer camps and 10 adult classes.

This year, they ran 13 after school programs, two spring break programs, and 14 summer camp sessions.

28 adult workshops were also held which Chernish said had wait lists in some cases.

This will return to council at its Tuesday (November 12th) meeting.

The gallery is continuing to look at alternative options should the town not renew its lease while programs continue to run.
