Northwest unemployment mark down to 7.5% in October

Northwest BC’s jobless mark in October dropped a bit according to Stats Canada.

In its recent Labour Fource Survey, the unemployment rate hit 7.5 per cent after it was 6.8 last year.

The drop comes when compared to last month when the mark hit 7.9 per cent.

Analyst Vince Ferrao told My Bulkley Lakes Now compared to last year, more people are working.

“Working in October were 45,600 people and a year ago, we had 43,600 people working.”

That number remains unchanged compared to last month.

The increase of workers year over year was mainly felt in a few industries.

“Employment increased in the service sector, more precisely in the healthcare and social assistance, business building, and other support services also increased,” Ferrao said.

Provincially, the unemployment rate dipped to 5.8 per cent after it was 6.0 in September and only trails Quebec at 5.7 per cent for being the lowest.

The Canadian mark remained unchanged compared to last month at 6.5 per cent.
