“He was a warm and credible person”: Nathan Cullen on John Horgan

“He was the one who encouraged me to come back into politics.”

Those words come from former Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen on former BC Premiere John Horgan.

This morning (Tuesday), Horgan passed away at the age of 65 following a battle with cancer.

“He was a very persuasive person, and he had a very clear vision of what he wanted to do for people,” Cullen said.

He said Horgan had an interest in the north and joined him in traveling to communities like Atlin and Haida Gwaii.

“He thought the smaller places, the more remote places were just as important as the big cities in the world,” said Cullen.

On his Facebook page, Cullen posted a photo of Horgan holding him over the bow of a ship during a trip to Haida Gwaii.

“He liked stunts, he liked making fun, he liked making fun of himself too, so he said we need a little Titanic moment.”

Cullen also mentioned they had been planning a one-on-one basketball game.

“We talked about it so many times and over so much time about who was worse and who had the worse knees. Life swept him away into work, but it became this big epic event that never took place.”

“His willingness in the midst of really serious things to step back and enjoy life made some of the trickier days easier,” said Cullen.
