2,600 people unemployed across northwest BC in November

Unemployment numbers dipped in November to 5.4 per cent across northwest BC.

The same time last year, that number was 6.7 per cent according to Statistics Canada.

Labour Force Analyst Vince Ferrao said the number is also down compared to October’s 7.5 points.

“This 5.4 per cent unemployment rate represents 2,600 people.”

45,800 people were working in the region last month, up from 44,300 a year ago.

“We had slightly more people working in the service industries. Business building and other support services were another sector that also went up,” said Ferrao.

The wholesale and retail industry saw a slight decline over the month.

The province had the second lowest unemployment rate across the country at 5.7 per cent compared to 5.8 in October.

Nationally, the mark hit 6.8 per cent – an eight-year high when excluding the COVID pandemic years.
