Water meters for municipal water users could be on the way in Burns Lake.
The idea was brought to council at Tuesday’s meeting as funding was available to do the project.
“We decided we would want to do more research before we apply for this type of project,” said Mayor Henry Wiebe.
A main issue brought up was the climate as cold temperatures prevent the meter from being installed outdoors.
“Then you have to have the meter inside the house which creates a whole new issue for village staff to be able to enter private homes,” said Wiebe.
Another factor being investigated is if adding the meter would lead to enough residents paying less for their water bill.
He added before the project gets the green light; a public consultation would be held to get feedback from residents.
If the project goes ahead, funding up to $3 million would be provided by the province.
“It’s one of the first discussions we had on it so it’s very early in the process,” Wiebe said.
