Spring feeling Friday experienced in Smithers

A new high temperature record was set on Friday in Smithers.

According to Environment Canada, the mercury got up to 6.5 degrees with the previous record being 5.6.

“It was set in 2010, 1941, and 1939,” said Meteorologist Brian Proctor.

“A fairly long-standing record and we broke it by a fairly significant amount.”

The warmer temperatures came as cooler air moved north towards Alaska which also caused new high minimum temperature records.

“For Smithers, the record was 0.5 degrees, so temperatures stayed above freezing all night. The previous record was 0.2 set in 1987,” said Proctor.

Later this week, below freezing high temperatures are expected to return.
