Discussions about who will operate the Smithers Ranger Park Building’s basement are on the agenda for tomorrow (Tuesday) night’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
The Edge Learning Centre and Bulkley Emergency Support Services (ESS) are both looking to use the space after the Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue (SAR) moved out.
In 2023, the learning centre requested a first right of refusal which town council approved for when SAR moved out.
According to a letter to the town, they hope to use the basement as a multi-purpose space for youth programing, creative arts, kitchen and food hub, and for childcare programs.
A plan to share the space with ESS is also included in their letter.
In a report to the committee, ESS is requesting the second floor of the building be used to operate the town’s Emergency Operations Centre and the basement used for storage and a training space.
The basement would also be used as an emergency reception centre when needed.
Currently, the service uses the fire hall storage building to store EOC and ESS equipment and use the fire hall’s training space for exercises.
The meeting starts at 5:00 p.m. and will be streamed on the town’s Facebook page.
