Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach shared his thoughts regarding Donald Trump’s inauguration speech, that started his second term as the US President.
“We live in frightening times,” he said.
“I’m deeply troubled that Americans have chosen a convicted felon and rapist as their leader, and President Trump’s unhinged threats over the past two weeks create serious uncertainty for Canada.”
Bachrach added the threats the US President has made should be taken seriously, including the proposed 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods.
“The impacts would be felt across the country because our economies are integrated and what happens in the US affects us profoundly in so many ways,” he said.
In addition, the tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber in the US is expected to increase in a few months.
“These are difficult issues to address because the American economy is so much bigger than Canada’s but that doesn’t mean we can’t address them,” said Bachrach.
He added during Trump’s last term in office, tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum were imposed which were fought with tariffs on products from certain states.
“We were able to essentially get those tariffs removed and addressed the situation in a way that benefited the economy.”
Bachrach hopes the tariffs won’t be imposed come February 1st, and if they do, that counter tariffs can be imposed.
“I think this is a time as Canadians when we need to reflect on what it is we value, come together in unity, and push back hard with every tool we have in the toolbox,” he said.
Bachrach hopes the relationship with US citizens, especially those who travel through the region, aren’t compromised due to what he calls Trump’s “irrational actions.”
