Smithers looks to better track natural asset development

An inventory of natural assets in the Town of Smithers is being developed.

During tonight’s (Tuesday) council meeting, a grant application for up to $150,000 from the Ministry of Environmental Management and Climate Readiness was approved for the project.

“Natural assets are becoming a more important item for the town, especially when we are applying for grant applications for capital projects,” said Director of Development Services Mark Allen.

This includes the Riverbank Erosion Protection Project being worked on to help reduce the risk of the Bulkley riverbank causing issues.

The inventory would help the town identify, track, and maintain the natural resources and assets within the Town boundaries.

It would also be used to track how climate change affects the ecosystem services they provide.

“In new grant applications, we’re already seeing some areas that require the town to report on or state what the town is doing with their natural asset management,” said Allen.

The ministry provided the town with $10,000 in December to help develop the proposal.
