This afternoon, (Monday) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the proposed 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods sold in the US would be delayed for a month.
Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach said the delay gives breathing room to create a response plan.
“The reality is, it’s been a time of great uncertainty for our economy and our country the past couple of weeks,” he added.
He stated if the tariffs are imposed on Canadian goods, then the impact would be devastating for the economy.
Along with effects being felt across the country, businesses and residents across northwest BC would feel it.
“I was on the phone with companies that are major employers in our region talking about the potential impact of 25 per cent tariffs and particularly the lumber industry is really exposed,” said Bachrach.
He added shopping local is important especially with the looming tariffs to help build and support the Canadian economy.
“We’re always going to be a trading nation but at the same time, we need to use those opportunities domestically, whether it’s government procurement or whether it’s consumer habits, we need to support Canadian.”
