Longest serving Hazelton mayor passes away

Former Hazelton mayor and the longest serving in the province, Alice Maitland, has died at the age of 91.

She entered the position in 1976 and held it for 42 years.

“Alice was so well known as Mayor of the Village of Hazelton – a role she fulfilled so capably for 42 years, making her BC’s longest serving mayor,” said Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill on Facebook.

“Her commitment to her community, to our region, to supporting women in government is her legacy (along with of course, her family).”

Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach also confirmed the news on Facebook.

“The longest-serving mayor in BC history and a renowned champion for rural communities, she was intelligent and kind and could fight like hell when it mattered. “Let’s start a revolution!” she’d say, with a twinkle in her eye. Alice spoke truth to power and our region was better for it,” he said.

Maitland’s daughter, Julie Maitland, is the current Mayor of Hazelton.
